Philippine Physics Society

Physicists, college and high school physics teachers, as well as research and development personnel in industry, are invited to participate in the 34th Annual National Physics Seminar/Workshop-Convention with the theme “Physics, Nationalism and Development” to be held on April 12 – 15, 2012 at Colegio de San Juan de Letran – Calamba, Calamba City, Laguna. The seminar/workshop-convention incorporates the 25th National Physics Olympics and the 20th National Physics Fair.

            The seminar-convention will feature lectures, workshops, short courses, equipment construction and utilization, exhibits, and an educational field trip.  Physics teachers, physicists, and industry practitioners are invited to contribute research papers, lectures, workshops, or demonstrations or to share their classroom/industry experience.  An abstract or description of the presentation (not exceeding half of an 8½” x 11” page, single-spaced) should be received not later than February 15, 2012 by Dr. Gerardo C. Maxino, Physics Department, Maxino College, 6200 Dumaguete City (email:
philippinephysics@yahoo.com).  For new PPS presenters, a one-paragraph profile should accompany the abstract.  For collaborative work, the presenter should be clearly indicated by an underline.

            The Physics Olympics will involve the application of physics principles and use of creativity in activities/contests like paper tower, egg drop, egg transport, large barge, super magnet, Bamboo Bridge, master robot and paper airplane.  There are three separate categories: teachers/professionals, college students, and high school students.             The Physics Fair will present investigatory physics projects by students and teachers in all levels.  No monetary prizes are involved; however, Certificates of Merit will be awarded to deserving entries.  Three copies of the research/project paper/report should be submitted to the undersigned on April 12, 2012.  The physics fair also welcomes exhibits of instructional materials (equipment, modules, etc.), pictorials, and posters.

            The registration fee is P1500. This covers seminar kit, certificates, snacks, membership fee, Philippine Physics Journal, one dinner, and an educational field trip. For lodging needs, please visit the PPS and Letran-Calamba websites.  An average of P60.00 per meal shall be available during lunch and dinner.

            Equipment may be purchased during the convention, with costs ranging from P400 to P5000.  The complete Mefragata Experiment Set, which can do 300 or more experiments/activities, costs P5000 (Early reservations are appreciated.). Parts of the set may also be bought.

Articles or notes for the Philippine Physics Journal (Vol. 34) should reach the undersigned not later than January 31, 2012. Contributions may deal with research, instruction/education, physics and society, apparatus construction, laboratory experiments, literature or equipment review. Contributions may be submitted in CD/diskette or, if less than 1.5 MB, as email attachment to philippinephysics@yahoo.com. Preferably, they should be in two columns, single-spaced, with font size comparable to 12 pts Times New Roman, 8½” x 11” page with 1” margin all-around, black and white illustrations, not more than 10 pages, Open Office (i.e. Ubuntu) or Microsoft Word.
Contributions should not have been previously published or submitted for publication elsewhere.  All submissions go through the process of refereeing and editing.  Contributions received late or unable to complete the editing process in time for publication will be considered for Volume 35 (2013).
